Bond repair has shifted from a targeted treatment to daily maintenance — and brands from Olaplex to Oribe are re-engineering their lines around what insiders call "bond repair fatigue."
The category isn't new, but the usage pattern is. Katie Gohman, CMO of Olaplex, tells Cosmetics Business: "Bond repair has evolved from a targeted treatment into essential daily maintenance."
That single sentence explains most of the product activity right now. If clients are reaching for bond builders every wash rather than once a month, formulation demands change — and so does the sell-through behind the chair.
Why the damage case keeps building
Gohman lays out the stressors plainly: "Hair is constantly damaged by colour and bleaching, chemical treatments, heat styling, brushing friction, and environmental stressors like UV and pollution."
Her point for stylists is structural, not cosmetic. "These factors break the internal disulfide bonds that give hair its strength and structure," she says.
So the consumer brief is no longer rescue after a bleach session. "Consumers are looking for products that repair this internal damage, protect against future breakage and keep hair healthy across all hair types," Gohman adds.
Note that phrasing: across all hair types. Brands are framing bond repair as texture-agnostic daily care, which widens the retail conversation well beyond the colour client.
What does 'smarter' bond repair mean?
Megan Curtin, Briogeo's Global Marketing Leader, gives the competitive read: "Bond repair remains popular because it gives consumers a clear, tangible way to address damage."
But she's blunt about who wins next. "The brands that lead will be the ones that make bond repair smarter: more effective, easier to use and grounded in the kind of high-performance approach consumers increasingly expect."
For practitioners, "easier to use" is the signal to watch. Treatments that fold into a normal wash-day routine — no extra timing, no separate step — remove the friction that kept bond builders occasional.
The takeaway for the salon floor
Two things are moving at once:
- Usage frequency is climbing from occasional treat toward everyday maintenance.
- Brand differentiation now hinges on efficacy plus convenience, not on the bond-repair claim alone.
That puts pressure on retail education. If clients treat bond repair as maintenance, the recurring-purchase conversation starts at the first consultation, not after damage appears.
The industry will get a read on which products are landing at the 25th anniversary of the Pure Beauty Awards, set for 15 October 2026 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Expect the daily-use bond builder to keep claiming shelf space through 2026.
